Dong Liu is a designer and artist from Beijing, currently lives and works in Heilbronn, whose practice moves between machines, materials, and quiet acts of making.

He is interested less in controlling form, and more in what happens when materials are allowed to participate in their own shaping.

Working across machining processes and hands-on experimentation, Dong explores the fragile balance between precision and chance, structure and collapse.

Rather than treating technology as a tool of dominance, he approaches it as a partner — setting conditions, then allowing time, gravity, and material behavior to complete the work.

At MEP, Dong’s practice is present through everyday ritual objects that quietly carry these ideas into daily life: from pebble rests shaped through simulated river erosion, to candles formed by dripping wax and rotation. Each piece is less about final appearance, and more about the story of how it comes into being.

Working with Dong feels like continuing an open conversation — about process, patience, and how objects can gently remind us to slow down and observe.

Available at MEP:

🥢Rolling — Pebble Chopstick & Matcha Spoon Rest

Formed from natural pebbles and shaped through a process that reenacts river erosion,
each piece is naturally unique and chosen by nature, carrying quiet traces of time and motion onto the table.

🕯️Uncontrolled — Gradient Drip Candle

Created by dripping molten wax onto a rotating disk, allowing gravity and material behavior to guide the final form.
Each candle grows layer by layer through movement and cooling — an unrepeatable outcome of controlled conditions and uncontrolled flow.
