A practice of waiting, tending and becoming — through urushi, beekeeping and disposable objects.

This October, MEP presents 候物 / Tending, a solo exhibition by Ni Daodao, an artist based in Zürich / Uster whose practice explores the slow and continuous relationships between material, time, body and environment.

Working across urushi lacquer, beekeeping, gardening, gathering and handwork, Daodao approaches making through observation, repetition, waiting, adjustment and care. Rather than moving towards fixed outcomes, the works develop through conditions that cannot be fully controlled — humidity, temperature, air, touch, living organisms and time.

For this exhibition, urushi becomes one of the central points of departure. Daodao applies natural urushi lacquer to disposable paper cups, bringing objects designed for brief use into a much slower process of material transformation.
